Welcome and Course Overview!

The Fundamentals of Radiation Protection course, presented by Carolina Safety & Health Consultants, LLC, is designed to teach you the fundamental concepts of radiation, radiation protection and the health effects of radiation exposures. This course is designed as a stand-alone course on radiation safety. However, it is also part of a three-module course package designed to meet the state radiation control program minimum training requirements for radiation safety officer (RSO) certification for radiation protection programs that include the operation of electronic radiation generating devices and radioactive materials sealed sources.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify and characterize the types of radiation fields and their properties.
  2. Differentiate mechanisms of radiation interaction with matter.
  3. Identify sources and detectors of radiation.
  4. Assess the biological effects of radiation exposures.
  5. Differentiate physical quantities and units of radiation exposure, dose, and dosimetry.
  6. Evaluate external and internal radiation doses.
  7. Differentiate shielding strategies for beta, neutron X-ray and gamma radiation sources.
  8. Evaluate basic parameters and utilization of ionizing radiation shielding.

Each Lesson will have one or more videos to watch, and a quiz. The Videos must be played completely, and the Quizzes must have 75% or higher passing grades for the Lesson to be considered Completed. You can pause and re-watch the videos as often as you'd like, and retake each quiz if needed. Once you have Completed all 8 Lessons in this course, you can download your Certificate of Completion!
